54 FHKI Annual Report 2013-14 The HKTC organised the Conflict Minerals Seminar in April 2013 to assist members in submitting their first report on conflict minerals to the United States Securities and Exchange Commission. More than 80 brands, factories, electronic and metal suppliers attended the seminar. A training seminar was organised in June 2013 to help members and toy factories develop a Bill of Material (BOM) and guide their suppliers to develop Material Bill of Substance (mBOS), so as to meet the European Toy Safety Directive requirement and chemical safety assessment requirement. The HKTC co-organised a legal seminar with the Toys Manufacturers Association of Hong Kong (TMHK) in July 2013 with an aim to increase industry players’ legal knowledge on the terms in business contracts. Speakers provided useful advice on how to identify hidden terms in business contracts as well as to clarify the liability and indemnity that may be involved. With the support of the BUD Fund, the HKTC co-organised with the FHKI, TMHK and the Hong Kong Trade Development Council a 20-month programme entitled “Exploring Mainland Toy Market for Hong Kong Toy Industry through Design, Upgrade and Branding”. The project, which was launched in September 2013, covers a series of activities: (i) a seminar on Introducing Toy Market in the Mainland was held in October 2013; (ii) a mission was made to Wuhan and Changsha where participants got first- hand experience at the local retail toy stores and wholesale markets. During the trip, two round table meetings were held to explore the challenges and opportunities of the toy market in the Mainland; and (iii) the “Hong Kong Toy Industry - Practical Platform for Domestic Sales in China” Campaign was launched in December 2013 under which designers and toy manufacturers were invited to collaborate and submit original design of toy products tailor- made for the Mainland market. Selected products would be showcased in retail stores, exhibitions or shopping malls in the Mainland. Several activities including seminars and meetings were organised during the Toys and Games Fair in January 2014. At the “Seminar on 10th Anniversary of the ICTI CARE Process (ICP): Retrospective and Outlook”, the evolution of the ethical manufacturing programme adopted in the toy and children’s products industry over the past 10 years, its current status, and the ICP’s strategic vision for the next five years were outlined. On the same day, the “Workshop on Toy Distribution Channels for Domestic Sales in the Mainland (I) – Retail Chains” was held. Speakers spoke on the advantages of using retail chains as the distribution channel, as well as procedures and criteria in entering toy retail chains in the Mainland. The Hong Kong Toys Industry Conference 2014 - “Global Challenges and Opportunities” was held in January to introduce the latest developments of Toys Safety Directive and EN71 Standards in Europe, toy safety requirements in the United States, Chemical Management Database and trends of the toy market in the Mainland. More than 200 participants attended the conference. The annual meeting of the Asian Committee of Toy Industries and a meeting with ICTI CARE Executive Committee were held on the last day of the Fair. Recognising that intellectual property (IP) policies adopted in the Mainland and other countries are different, a training session on Intellectual Property of Toy The HKTC co-organised the Annual Dinner of Hong Kong Toy Industry with the TMHK in December 2013, with Chief Secretary Carrie Lam as the guest of honour. The theme of this year’s dinner was “Transformation”.
