Gordon C Holdings was among the first batch of Hong Kong industries relocating production lines northward. In around 1979 the company chose to set up a factory in Guangzhou to handle a RMB150 million processing trade contract of assembling Swiss BFG mechanical watch movements. The company had to hire, train and organise a sizeable labour force to work on the assembly lines and use the ultra-precision equipment. Therefore, the company focuses on the manufacturing of middle-and-higher-end products. The company is fully vertically integrated providing one-stop service to customers, from the supply of materials, like steel, to brand building, wholesale and online-offline services. “To ensure our competitiveness can be maintained, we need to be visionary and progress faster than others. We must not live in one’s own legacy but rely on the big data. Although investment will be substantial and useful results may not be readily available, we must be patient. It is important that business decisions are made from political, financial, legal and technology perspectives. Speedy execution of decisions and proper division of responsibilities, power and task accomplishment as well as good talent integration are keys to success,” Mr Gordon Chow said. That was one of the largest investment contracts at that time and the northbound decision enabled the company to gain an absolute advantage. A few of its competitors who set up factories in Wong Chuk Hang closed down eventually because of the unbearable high production costs in Hong Kong. For an industrial enterprise, the key consideration of its factory location must be based on its business characteristics. Apart from assessing its own needs (including various stages on the production line starting from R&D to manufacturing to quality control), the reliability and quality of the whole supply chain have to be considered as well. Gordon C Holdings started its business in OEM activities, and gradually extended to ODM and OBM. Nowadays it is very difficult to maintain profitability if only OEM businesses are conducted because the profit margin is getting slimmer. Mr Gordon Chow is the founder and President of Gordon C Holdings Corp, which is a diversified watch making business group, with operations in watch design, OEM watch services, precision case, watchstrap and surface manufacturing, jewellery design and manufacturing and professional metal processing.
