FHKI 60th Anniversary Commemorative Book
efforts to nourish the strength of one of the economic pillars of Hong Kong. For the young and upcoming industrialists, we hope this book will also provide them with insightful inspirations as Hong Kong industries take bold steps into the future. Apart from the book, we staged the exhibition “Striving and Transforming – The History of Hong Kong Industry” at the Hong Kong Museum of History. Through the display of some 1,200 exhibits of classic Hong Kong- made products, the exhibition presented the history of Hong Kong industry to the public, illustrating how Hong Kong industrialists strived for success and paid tribute to the diligent workers for their contributions to the booming of industry. The thriving industrial sector in turn has stimulated the profound development of the Hong Kong economy. During the past six decades, we witnessed the rise, rapid expansion and restructuring of Hong Kong industries. There were two historical strategic transformation points for Hong Kong industries. The first one was in the late 1950s when Hong Kong started to change its course of development from an entrepot to a booming industrial economy and successfully turned itself into one of the Four Dragons in Asia in the mid-1970s. The second one was in late 1970s when Hong Kong industries took advantage of Mainland Economic Opening Policy to expand their production base into the Pearl River Delta region, subsequently expanding into the wider parts of the country, and further venturing offshore to other parts of the world. Hong Kong industries have successfully established itself as the mastermind of the worldwide supply chains in the 1990s. And Hong Kong industries are right now at the third strategic transformation point as we are experiencing the unprecedented advancement of technologies and the emergence of innovative applications that have driven fundamental and disruptive changes in all aspects of life. Our ability to harness these changes will enable us to rise to new heights. As the FHKI enters the second Jiazi, we will continue to partner with the industries and play the leadership role in the transformation process to strive for greater success. Last but not least, I would like to thank my fellow Organising Committee members for their invaluable input and advice. My thanks also go to the Secretariat for their support and efficient preparation work. 14 香港工業總會六十周年紀念特刊
