The reputable “Made in Hong Kong” label represents quality, safety and assurance. This is essential to the success of the Hong Kong food industry. Although Hong Kong’s local market is relatively small, it is located at the core of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area which has great market potential. Hong Kong food industrial enterprises can capitalise on the geographic and policy advantages to venture into this big market. There is no government intervention on the sourcing and import of food items. The food market is basically left to market mechanism. Our company has benefited from this policy. As for future development, the Greater Bay Area market should be the focus of local food enterprises. Given the Bay Area Development Initiative is a national strategy and the open and growing economy in the Area, should appropriate marketing tactics be formulated to target Greater Bay Area consumers, Hong Kong food enterprises will be able to capture the vast business opportunities there. The Mainland domestic market is very extensive and diversified. The dining habits and preference of people in the north and the south are varied so it is advisable to take the Greater Bay Area as a stepping stone to the vast Mainland market. Hong Kong and Guangdong have similar dining culture, making it easier to capture the Greater Bay Area market. Hong Kong food enterprises should understand in detail the preference of consumers of their target markets before deciding on the correct products to be supplied. Hong Kong’s testing and certification infrastructure is well established and certification schemes operated by Hong Kong testing laboratories are recognised worldwide. Like other local food industrial enterprises, Golden Resources has obtained various international certificates on safety, monitoring and management system, including ISO9001, HACCP and ISO22000. “We are also a licensee of the Hong Kong Q-Mark Scheme, a quality certification well recognised by local and Greater Bay Area consumers. We suggest that the Government assist Hong Kong food enterprises so that they can enjoy quick-pass arrangement at border checkpoints by setting up a certification scheme accepted by the Mainland authorities. For example, locally processed food products with Hong Kong Q-Mark certification can enjoy the ‘green passage’ when exporting to the Greater Bay Area cities,” said Mr Anthony Lam. The Hong Kong Government’s regulation is favourable to the local food industry. Unlike Japan, Korea and countries in Southeast Asia, the Hong Kong Government does not impose restriction on the import of rice and other staple food items. Anthony Lam is CEO and Vice-Chairman of Golden Resources Development International Ltd. Golden Resources is Hong Kong’s leading rice wholesaler with production lines in Hong Kong, undertaking processing and formulating, packaging, marketing and distribution of rice products.
