Operating large and modernised factories is no easy task. It involves systematic management and effective staff training. Local Hong Kong businessmen in those days were mostly compradors, traders as well as operators of small shops and workshops, and did not know how to manage large factories. Instead, the Shanghainese manufacturers, with their practical experience, effectively established the basic system and mode of operation for Hong Kong industries. Besides, since Shanghai had already been an international city before World War II and their industry was “Without the industrialists from Shanghai and nearby cities, Hong Kong could not have successfully developed into an industrial city. Our fathers’ generation operated large factories in Shanghai and nearby cities, and brought along their management experience, production technology, professional knowledge and capital to Hong Kong. They made significant efforts and played a pivotal role in Hong Kong’s industrialisation, building a strong foundation for Hong Kong’s industrial development,” said Mr Henry Tang. The Tang Family is of Wuxi ancestry and operated large woollen mills as well as knitting factories.
