Hong Kong is one of the largest exporters of spectacles and frames, after mainland China and Italy. Hong Kong manufacturers are specialised in producing medium and high-end frames, offering production services to overseas buyers and renowned international brands on OEM and ODM basis. In the past year, overseas order dropped due to the pandemic, leading some Hong Kong manufacturers to establish their original brands to exploit the highly fragmented market in the mainland China. Lately, spectacles manufacturers and retail brands have begun online stores business under the influence of pandemic and with the support of advanced digital technology. With improving technology of 3D facial scanning and online vision tests, customers are now able to purchase optical products online with confidence. Some larger-scale manufacturers introduced advanced machinery and information technology equipment to apply computer-aided design/manufacturing technology and establish CNC production lines to enhance product quality and production process. Hong Kong’s spectacles industry has well-established advantages in the design, manufacturing technology and international business network, as well as a mature industrial supply chain, to support its further development under the national dual circulation strategy.
