Hong Kong Industrialist Aug Oct 2021
Despite the plunge in the early stage of COVID-19 outbreak, the global automobile industry picked up quickly in the later half of 2020 while some manufacturers have seen record-high level of production. As one of the world’s major automobile markets, the sales of automobile in the mainland China reached over 8 million units in the first four months of 2021, with an increase of 4.5% compared to the same period in 2019. Meanwhile, national and local administrations’ subsidies for new energy vehicles have boosted the sales of such vehicles to 732,000 units in the first quarter. Furthermore, the global sales of electric vehicle have grown against the odds in 2020. According to the International Energy Agency’s “Global EV Outlook 2021 Technology Report”, the number of new EV registrations worldwide has reached 3 million in 2020, increased by 41% per year. With 1.4 million new vehicle registrations, Europe has become the world's largest EV market for the first time and is expected to continue to grow steadily. Under the worldwide trend on carbon reduction and developing smarter cities, EV and new energy vehicles are expected to become one of the focal points of the R&D of global automotive engineering. Multiple international automobile brands, including Volve, Jaguar and Bentley, has announced earlier to terminate the sales of fossil fuel vehicles. Locally, the Hong Kong Government launched the “Hong Kong Roadmap on Popularisation of Electric Vehicles” to set out the long-term plans to promote the adoption of EVs and their associated supporting facilities in Hong Kong. The industry will strive to capture the opportunities arising from new energy vehicles and associated sectors through R&D and to develop automotive parts and materials that are more lightweight, digitised, electronic and environmentally friendly to bolster long-term competitiveness.
