May-Jul 2021 “Hong Kong Industrialist”
youth industrial talents. The Committee is now making progressive strides in their works. Over the years, we have also witnessed the Government sparing no effort in fostering the growth of Innovation & Technology (I&T) and re-industrialisation. One of the critical links is to scale up the local talent pool and incentivise youth to pursue career in emerging industries. Universities and tertiary institutions both local and worldwide are heightening the values of I&T and the breeding of industrial talent. FHKI, as the bridge between industrialists and academic institutes, strives to offer opportunities for students to get acquainted with Hong Kong manufacturing. In view of this, FHKI has announced its official partnership with City University of Hong Kong for the GREAT (Global Research Enrichment and Technopreneurship) Programme. With a balanced blend of theoretical and practical components, the Programme is aimed to cultivate next-generation industrial talents who are proficient in all aspects of technology, innovation and business management. Besides, industry groups under the auspices of FHKI teamed up with relevant disciplines in local institutions to offer placement opportunities in FHKI member companies for young students, through which they will gain hands-on understanding of the working environment and career prospects of modern manufacturing. In addition, Hong Kong businesses are in favour of the Greater Bay Area Youth Employment (“GBAYES”) Scheme, officially launched in January this year, where young graduates are subsidised to take up I&T-related career across Hong Kong and Mainland. By lining up the Government, tertiary institutions and the industry to work in tandem, we are offering a fertile ground for grooming a diverse mix of the needed talents for re-industrialisation to grow and prosper. in light of the social restrictions, all the wonderful memories brought by the anniversary activities shall prevail. Piloting industries through 60 years of dedication In celebration of FHKI’s 60 th Anniversary, the “Striving and Transforming – The History of Hong Kong Industry” exhibition was held at the Hong Kong Museum of History with a special television programme last year. The exhibition also went online this April for the public to revisit the manufacturing heydays of Hong Kong over the past century. In parallel, FHKI conducted the “ Made by Hong Kong – The Way Forward for HK Industries ” research study to survey the latest developments of Hong Kong manufacturers and advocate for longer term industrial policy. Held in a virtual format in January this year, the “Industrialist Forum 2020: Propelling to the Next Normal” rallied industry elites under one roof to outline the future development of Hong Kong industries. Although we were unable to gather face-to-face, all the fond memories brought by the anniversary activities shall prevail. My two-year chairmanship has passed in a flash. As the COVID-19 vaccination programme has begun taking place, I envision better days to come when the sun will shine through. In spite of the hurdles ahead, Hong Kong industries are known for thriving in difficulties with supreme resiliency. As I step down as the Chairman, I shall always stay by the side of FHKI to serve our fellow industrialists diligently. I look forward to seeing the 2021-23 leadership steering the organisation and members to ride on the tremendous opportunities offered by the high tides of innovation and re-industrialisation, thereby writing a new page for Hong Kong industries. 5-7/2021 | 7
