Engaging Sustainability Through Wastes Conversion HAECO fully understands that climate change will bring energy crisis to the company and community. Therefore, HAECO is dedicated in providing high quality aircraft maintenance services and at the same time, committed to reduce the environmental impact caused by the aviation industry. They are endeavour to achieve sustainable development by reducing waste and carbon emissions and using water sources efficiently. HAECO was awarded the Gold Award of the manufacturing sector with their multiple outstanding projects: the aircraft exterior dry wash technique, waste conversion system and the patented long-range Wide Area Network. The aircraft exterior dry wash technique uses 90% less water than the traditional “wet wash” method, and also improves operational efficiency by shortening the towing time, lower fuel consumption and carbon emissions. Matthew Tang, Group Environment Manager, says, “This aircraft exterior dry wash technique not only saves water resources, it also keeps the aircraft surface clean which lower jet fuel consumption by reducing the drag in flight. The dry wash detergent does not contain any restricted substances and could be completely biodegradable. With all these advantages and company’s effort in exploring its application to different airline customers, this eco-friendly technique has been widely used.” HAECO’s latest development turns waste into energy, this system is to reuse the spent aviation fuel and absorption chiller to generate cool water for feeding the central chiller system. This can fully utilise the left-over fuel and reduce liquid chemical waste. This recycling system could reuse 26,000 litres of aviation fuel annually and saves chemical disposal cost around HK$300,000 per year. In addition, the patented digital wireless data communication technology, Long Range Wide Area Network, enables transmissions within a very long range which could effectively locate ground service equipment and minimise unnecessary carbon emissions.
