Stabilise Supply Chain with “China +1” Strategy Many local companies are currently facing the challenges from COVID-19 epidemic and the China-US trade tensions. Meanwhile, the operating costs in Mainland China have increased sharply in recent years, such as wages, social security premiums and environmental protection costs. Therefore, Hong Kong manufacturers have begun to adopt the “China +1” supply chain strategy, grasping the opportunities in the Greater China market while moving the labor-intensive production processes out of Mainland China. These production lines are relocated to relatively cost-saving regions in Southeast Asian countries such as Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Cambodia, and Myanmar to establish a more diversified regional supply chain network. This newly emerging economy of Southeast Asia has a population of 700 million, and two-thirds of people are under the age of 35 on average. This kind of population composition could provide a large and relatively cheap labour force and generate a strong consumption power from these young people. Therefore, it is not only an ideal place for setting up factories but also a great opportunity to consider expanding the ASEAN sales market. Here are six Southeast Asian countries where manufacturers could consider relocating production lines. Six Southeast Asian countries where manufacturers could consider relocating production lines * establishing production lines * Reference: The Hong Kong Productivity Council
