Annual Report 2013-14
26 FHKI Annual Report 2013-14 Technology Development Committee The Technology Development Committee was established under the purview of the FHKI in 2013 to lobby the Government on how best to promote the application of technology in industries, and facilitate co-operation amongst technology owners, research institutes and industrial enterprises. The Committee is headed by Chairman of the Guangzhou Chapter of the PRDC Dr Samson Tam, also the Honorary President of Group 5 (Hong Kong Electronics Industry Council) of the FHKI. The Committee comprises entrepreneurs of local electronic and information technology industries as well as representatives from the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation and the Hong Kong Productivity Council. It held its first meeting in October to discuss its work plan. It then proposed recommendations to the Government on ways to nurture innovation and technology industries in Hong Kong during the course of consultation on the Policy Address and the Budget. In the same month, a briefing was held on the latest developments in electronics fairs in Hong Kong and Japan to discuss synergy between electronics/information technology and industries. The Committee also met with leading technology experts from several world-renowned universities in Britain and Switzerland in March 2014 to explore collaboration opportunities. Promoting Local Design The Design Council of Hong Kong was established by the FHKI in 1968. Its mandate is to promote the importance of design and its use among industries to add value to their products. Under the leadership of its Chairman Eric Yim, the Council participated in a number of activities during the year to promote local design. In October 2013, the Council received a delegation from Shenzhen City Council and Shenzhen Industrial Design Association to share experience in industrial design. In December, the Council met with design delegates from Japan and Belgium, including representatives from Fujitsu, Hitachi, Sony, TAMAWA s.p.r.l. and NAOS design. The delegates talked about the development of product design in their own countries and how to leverage on design to improve their competitiveness. In March 2014, the Council organised a briefing and an experience-sharing session by the Grand Award Winner of the 2013 Consumer Product Design Category of the Hong Kong Awards for Industries - Nauticam. The company’s insights on how to add value to its businesses through innovative designs were well received by participants. During the year, a sub-group was formed under the Council to formulate the D-Mark Scheme. The Scheme aims to encourage companies to build up design capabilities and to give recognition to companies that have established an effective framework for harnessing quality designs. Companies with a valid Hong Kong Business Registration and pledge to comply with specific requirements set by the Council are eligible to apply for the D-Mark. The Council was a supporting organisation of various design- related events such as the Business of Design Week and Knowledge of Design Week organised by the Hong Kong Design Centre; George Nelson Exhibition organised by the Hong Kong Design Institute; and Cross Industry Matching Showcase 2013 organised by the Innovative Entrepreneur Association and co- organised by the Hong Kong Productivity Council.
